At Park University there are many clubs that are offered to provide students with a way to make connections, learn new skills and have fun! The future educators club features all of this and so much more.
Meeting once a month, the future educators club works to provide a safe space for students to come and collaborate with peers. “(We’ve) created a space for all of us to come together and ask each other questions,” said Emma Ball, senior at Park and secretary of the club. This safe space includes having open discussions regarding classes, events and provides assistance for students to reach their educational goals.
The future educators club provides many opportunities for students to reach these goals. Sponsor and chair of the education department, Dr. Suzanne Tiemann, works to bring in guest speakers to assist students and answer questions. “We had three principles come in and hear what they wanted out of a first year teacher,” Ball said, recalling previous years of the club. These guest speakers range from answering questions, providing connections to observe class and help build a strong resume.
Along with guest speakers, the future educators club works to build connections with teachers and students alike that will last a lifetime. “(We) have other people to help figure out how to get to teaching,” said newly elected treasurer, Ariel Jacobs. These connections work to help aspiring teachers at Park find a job in life after graduating. The club also helps to bring students closer to professors at Park who have previously been in principle and teaching positions and individuals who are currently teaching in surrounding school districts.
While the future educators club may be promoted towards current education majors, all students at Park are welcome to join. “It is a very welcoming place even if you're not in education,” said ball. With fun activities like donut parties and ice breakers, the future educators club is made for anyone! “It’s informal and there’s snacks!,” said Jacobs.
